Nobel Peace Prize 1984 Desmond Tutu is celebrating his 92nd birthday today. As a number of online tributes attest, he is one of the most acclaimed religious figures of his generation.

Popular religious figure Desmond Tutu has always liked to keep a bit of himself hidden from view. At 92nd birthday, he remains a man of many facets.

Tutu, a cultural icon

Born Desmond Mpilo Tutu in Klerksdorp on October 7, 1931, his career spans an arc over many different eras and tastes in South African history. Tutu's not just a great religious figure, he's an inspiration, an icon. At this point in his career, there seems to be little Desmond hasn't done.

And we've got a feeling the next 12 months are going to be even bigger and better for Desmond Tutu as he promises more to come. After all, he's only 92.
