It has been exactly 11 long years since Doc Watson died in Winston-Salem on May 29, 2012 at the age of 89. As a number of online tributes attest, he was one of the most acclaimed guitarists of his generation.

Watson, a cultural icon

Born Arthel Lane Watson in Deep Gap on March 3, 1923, his career spanned an arc over many different eras and tastes in American history. Watson was not just a great guitarist, he was an icon, an all-around inspiration to everyone.
