Remembering Ella Fitzgerald, 27 Years Later

It has been exactly 27 long years since Queen of Jazz Ella Fitzgerald died in Beverly Hills on June 15, 1996 at the age of 79. As a number of online tributes attest, she was one of the most acclaimed singers of her generation.

Today, fans of Ella Fitzgerald along with the rest of the music world have been remembering the iconic woman she was.

Fitzgerald, a cultural icon

Born Ella Jane Fitzgerald in Newport News on April 25, 1917, her career spanned an arc over many different eras and tastes in American history. Fitzgerald was not just a great singer, she was an icon, an all-around inspiration to everyone.

Her legacy continues to grow as new generations of fans are discovering her unique musical heritage.

It's been 27 years since the tragic loss of Ella Fitzgerald and her personality still resonate strongly within us all. Although Ella Fitzgerald is no longer physically here, her presence is more powerful than ever. She left a void that has yet to be filled.
