Former Germany's football manager Franz Beckenbauer died in Salzburg on January 7, 2024 at the age of 78. As a number of online tributes attest, he was one of the most acclaimed footballers of his generation.

Born Franz Anton Beckenbauer in Munich on September 11, 1945, his career spanned an arc over many different eras and tastes in German history. Beckenbauer was not just a great footballer, he was an icon, an all-around inspiration to everyone.

His legacy will continue to grow as new generations of fans are discovering his unique heritage.

Although Franz Beckenbauer is no longer physically here, his presence is more powerful than ever. He left a void that has yet to be filled.
