It has been exactly 46 long years since Lynyrd Skynyrd lead singer Ronnie Van Zant died in Gillsburg on October 20, 1977 at the age of 29. As a number of online tributes attest, he was one of the most acclaimed singers of his generation.

Today, fans of Ronnie Van Zant along with the rest of the music world have been remembering the iconic man he was.

Van Zant, a cultural icon

Born Ronald Wayne Van Zant in Jacksonville on January 15, 1948, his career spanned an arc over many different eras and tastes in American history. Van Zant was not just a great singer, he was an icon, an all-around inspiration to everyone.

His legacy continues to grow as new generations of fans are discovering his unique musical heritage.
