Why in the world did Commander in Chief end?

When Commander in Chief came to an end after 1 year in June 2006, million viewers tuned in to say goodbye to Speaker of the House Nathan Templeton (Donald Sutherland), President Mackenzie "Mac" Allen (Geena Davis) and White House Chief of Staff Jim Gardner (Harry Lennix). And since then, they have been itching for a reunion.

Commander in Chief without Speaker of the House Nathan Templeton?

After the tragic passing of Donald Sutherland in 2024 how are the writers going to handle the absence of Speaker of the House Nathan Templeton. It seems pretty hard to imagine. “The right thing to do for the show, at least at this point, is to have that character pass,” a source close to the production says.

Would a Commander in Chief reunion disappoint people?

Commander in Chief aired from 2005-2006 and is considered one of the most influential TV shows ever on pop culture. Although no original episodes have been shot since, it has remained a regular feature on many station's schedules. But Davis said she's not sure if Commander in Chief would work today. “I don't want to see old President Mackenzie "Mac" Allen,” she told a journalist (Davis turned 68 in January). “Everyone’s going to have different vision of what the character is like, so to have that materialize is going to disappoint most people,” she added.

Still hoping for a Commander in Chief movie?

In a recent interview, Peter Coyote (who played Warren Keaton) said he can't imagine a Commander in Chief reunion hitting the big screen. “I'd rather people go, ‘Oh, please! Please!’ than ‘I can't believe you did that. It was horrible.’”

Co-star Mark-Paul Gosselaar (who played Richard "Dickie" McDonald) has also previously explained, “It would be terrible to do something and have it not be good,”. “It was so terrific ... If we did a Commander in Chief movie and it sucked, then it would, you know, blemish it.”

On the subject of whether there could be a Commander in Chief film, Geena Davis stated : “I think it's a bit of a case of ‘the book is better than the movie’.”

What about a Commander in Chief reboot?

Recasting Commander in Chief for a modern reboot. Hollywood is known for remaking remakes of films or tv series and the studios might think it would be great to bring the story back with a new set of characters.
