It has been exactly 54 long years since Janis Joplin died in Hollywood on October 4, 1970 at the age of 27. As a number of online tributes attest, she was one of the most acclaimed singers of her generation.
Today, fans of Janis Joplin (Mercedes Benz, Me and Bobby McGee, Piece of My Heart, ...) along with the rest of the music world have been remembering the iconic woman she was.
Joplin, a cultural icon
Born Janis Lyn Joplin in Port Arthur on January 19, 1943, her career spanned an arc over many different eras and tastes in American history. Joplin was not just a great singer, she was an icon, an all-around inspiration to everyone.
In 1971 she touched the hearts of millions with ‘Me and Bobby McGee’. Her legacy continues to grow as new generations of fans are discovering her unique musical heritage.
