It has been exactly 55 long years since Janis Joplin died in Hollywood on October 4, 1970 at the age of 27. As a number of online tributes attest, she was one of the most acclaimed singers of her generation.
Today, fans of Janis Joplin (Mercedes Benz, Me and Bobby McGee, Piece of My Heart, ...) along with the rest of the music world have been remembering the iconic woman she was.
Joplin, a cultural icon
Born Janis Lyn Joplin in Port Arthur on January 19, 1943, her career spanned an arc over many different eras and tastes in American history. Joplin was not just a great singer, she was an icon, an all-around inspiration to everyone.
In 1968 she touched the hearts of millions with ‘Piece of My Heart’. Her legacy continues to grow as new generations of fans are discovering her unique musical heritage.
It's been 55 years since the tragic loss of Janis Joplin and her personality still resonate strongly within us all. Although Janis Joplin is no longer physically here, her presence is more powerful than ever. She left a void that has yet to be filled.
