Remembering João Gilberto, 5 Years Later

It has been exactly 5 long years since João Gilberto died in Rio de Janeiro on July 6, 2019 at the age of 88. As a number of online tributes attest, he was one of the most acclaimed singers of his generation.

Today, fans of João Gilberto (Amoroso, Getz/Gilberto, Chega de Saudade, ...) along with the rest of the music world have been remembering the iconic man he was.

Gilberto, a cultural icon

Born João Gilberto Prado Pereira de Oliveira in Juazeiro on June 10, 1931, his career spanned an arc over many different eras and tastes in Brazilian history. Gilberto was not just a great singer, he was an icon, an all-around inspiration to everyone.

In 1964 he touched the hearts of millions with ‘Getz/Gilberto’. His legacy continues to grow as new generations of fans are discovering his unique musical heritage.

It's been 5 years since the tragic loss of João Gilberto and his personality still resonate strongly within us all. Although João Gilberto is no longer physically here, his presence is more powerful than ever. He left a void that has yet to be filled.
