It has been exactly 45 long years since John Wayne died in Los Angeles on June 11, 1979 at the age of 72. As a number of online tributes attest, he was one of the most acclaimed actors of his generation.

Wayne, a cultural icon

Born Marion Mitchell Morrison in Winterset on May 26, 1907, his career spanned an arc over many different eras and tastes in American history. Wayne was not just a great actor, he was an icon, an all-around inspiration to everyone.

In 1939 he touched the hearts of millions as the Ringo Kid in ‘Stagecoach’. His legacy continues to grow as new generations of fans are discovering his unique heritage.
