It has been exactly 35 long years since Laurence Olivier died in Ashurst on July 11, 1989 at the age of 82. As a number of online tributes attest, he was one of the most acclaimed actors of his generation.

Olivier, a cultural icon
Born Laurence Kerr Olivier in Dorking on May 22, 1907, his career spanned an arc over many different eras and tastes in British history. Olivier was not just a great actor, he was an icon, an all-around inspiration to everyone.
In 1960 he touched the hearts of millions as Crassus in ‘Spartacus’. His legacy continues to grow as new generations of fans are discovering his unique heritage.
