It has been exactly 20 long years since Leslie Cheung died in Hong Kong on April 1, 2003 at the age of 46. As a number of online tributes attest, he was one of the most acclaimed actors of his generation.

Cheung, a cultural icon

Born Leslie Cheung Kwok-wing in Hong Kong on September 12, 1956, his career spanned an arc over many different eras and tastes in history. Cheung was not just a great actor, he was an icon, an all-around inspiration to everyone.

In 1993 he touched the hearts of millions as Cheng Dieyi in ‘Farewell My Concubine’. His legacy continues to grow as new generations of fans are discovering his unique heritage.
