It has been exactly 19 long years since Soraya died in Miami on May 10, 2006 at the age of 37. As a number of online tributes attest, she was one of the most acclaimed singers of her generation.
Today, fans of Soraya (¿Cómo sería?, Casi, De repente, ...) along with the rest of the music world have been remembering the iconic woman she was.
Soraya, a cultural icon
Born Soraya Raquel Lamilla Cuevas in Point Pleasant on March 11, 1969, her career spanned an arc over many different eras and tastes in American history. Soraya was not just a great singer, she was an icon, an all-around inspiration to everyone.
In 1996 she touched the hearts of millions with ‘De repente’. Her legacy continues to grow as new generations of fans are discovering her unique musical heritage.
It's been 19 years since the tragic loss of Soraya and her personality still resonate strongly within us all. Although Soraya is no longer physically here, her presence is more powerful than ever. She left a void that has yet to be filled.
