It has been exactly 26 long years since Tammy Wynette died in Nashville on April 6, 1998 at the age of 55. As a number of online tributes attest, she was one of the most acclaimed singers of her generation.

Today, fans of Tammy Wynette (Stand by Your Man, ...) along with the rest of the music world have been remembering the iconic woman she was.

Wynette, a cultural icon

Born Virginia Wynette Pugh in Itawamba County on May 5, 1942, her career spanned an arc over many different eras and tastes in American history. Wynette was not just a great singer, she was an icon, an all-around inspiration to everyone.

In 1968 she touched the hearts of millions with ‘Stand by Your Man’. Her legacy continues to grow as new generations of fans are discovering her unique musical heritage.

It's been 26 years since the tragic loss of Tammy Wynette and her personality still resonate strongly within us all. Although Tammy Wynette is no longer physically here, her presence is more powerful than ever. She left a void that has yet to be filled.
