The iconic and legendary religious figure turns 88 on Thursday, Jul. 6, 2023.

Nobel Peace Prize 1989 The Dalai Lama is celebrating his 88th birthday today. As a number of online tributes attest, he is one of the most acclaimed religious figures of his generation.

Popular religious figure The Dalai Lama has always liked to keep a bit of himself hidden from view. At 88th birthday, he remains a man of many facets.

The Dalai Lama, a cultural icon

Born Tenzin Gyatso in Taktser on July 6, 1935, his career spans an arc over many different eras and tastes in Tibetan history. The Dalai Lama's not just a great religious figure, he's an inspiration, an icon. At this point in his career, there seems to be little The Dalai Lama hasn't done.

And we've got a feeling the next 12 months are going to be even bigger and better for the Dalai Lama as he promises more to come. After all, he's only 88.
