It has been exactly 24 long years since The Singing Madman Charles Trenet died in Créteil on February 19, 2001 at the age of 87. As a number of online tributes attest, he was one of the most acclaimed poets of his generation.
Today, fans of Charles Trenet (Douce France, La Mer, Y'a d'la joie, ...) along with the rest of the world have been remembering the iconic man he was.
Trenet, a cultural icon
Born Louis Charles Auguste Claude Trenet in Narbonne on May 18, 1913, his career spanned an arc over many different eras and tastes in French history. Trenet was not just a great poet, he was an icon, an all-around inspiration to everyone.
In 1947 he touched the hearts of millions with ‘Douce France’. His legacy continues to grow as new generations of fans are discovering his unique heritage.
It's been 24 years since the tragic loss of Charles Trenet and his personality still resonate strongly within us all. Although Charles Trenet is no longer physically here, his presence is more powerful than ever. He left a void that has yet to be filled.
