Fernandel, a cultural icon

Born Fernand-Joseph-Désiré Contandin in Marseille on May 8, 1903, his career spanned an arc over many different eras and tastes in French history. Fernandel was not just a great actor, he was an icon, an all-around inspiration to everyone.

In 1959 he touched the hearts of millions as Charles Bailly in ‘The Cow and I’. His legacy continues to grow as new generations of fans are discovering his unique heritage.
