It has been exactly 54 long years since Fernandel died in Paris on February 26, 1971 at the age of 67. As a number of online tributes attest, he was one of the most acclaimed actors of his generation.

Fernandel, a cultural icon

Born Fernand-Joseph-Désiré Contandin in Marseille on May 8, 1903, his career spanned an arc over many different eras and tastes in French history. Fernandel was not just a great actor, he was an icon, an all-around inspiration to everyone.

In 1959 he touched the hearts of millions as Charles Bailly in ‘The Cow and I’. His legacy continues to grow as new generations of fans are discovering his unique heritage.
