It has been exactly 20 long years since Ray Charles died in Greenville on June 10, 2004 at the age of 73. As a number of online tributes attest, he was one of the most acclaimed singers of his generation.

Charles, a cultural icon
Born Ray Charles Robinson in Albany on September 23, 1930, his career spanned an arc over many different eras and tastes in American history. Charles was not just a great singer, he was an icon, an all-around inspiration to everyone.
In 1961 he touched the hearts of millions with ‘Hit the Road Jack’. His legacy continues to grow as new generations of fans are discovering his unique musical heritage.
It's been 20 years since the tragic loss of Ray Charles and his personality still resonate strongly within us all. Although Ray Charles is no longer physically here, his presence is more powerful than ever. He left a void that has yet to be filled.
