It has been exactly 28 long years since Sonny Bono died in Stateline on January 5, 1998 at the age of 62. As a number of online tributes attest, he was one of the most acclaimed singers of his generation.

Bono, a cultural icon
Born Salvatore Phillip Bono in Detroit on February 16, 1935, his career spanned an arc over many different eras and tastes in American history. Bono was not just a great singer, he was an icon, an all-around inspiration to everyone.
